A book club with the goals of Enlightenment, Affirmation, and Empowerment.
“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”
― James Baldwin
I once heard a saying that went something like, “If you want to keep Black people from knowing something valuable, put it in a book.” I believe there is some truth to why white folks would say something like this. After all, they forbade Black folks from reading for centuries while simultaneously forcing us to digest specific passages from their Bible to keep us ignorant and enslaved.
Therefore, we believe what James Baldwin says…
“Read, read, read. Never stop reading. And when you can’t read anymore, write.”
— James Baldwin
We also agree with the words of Fredrick Douglass, who said…
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
— Frederick Douglass
We believe that reading and engaging in community dialogue—even when we disagree with each other—open the minds and hearts of our people and inspire personal freedom and collective liberation. And that is what the Black Liberation Book Club is all about: Enlightenment, Affirmation, and Empowerment.
